How is WPM Calculated?
Understanding the metrics is crucial for improvement. Here is the breakdown of the formulas used in our tool, which adhere to international typing standards:
- Gross WPM: This is the raw speed. Formula:
(All Typed Characters / 5) / Time (min). Note that in typing standards, a "word" is consistently defined as 5 characters, including spaces. - Net WPM: This is your actual useful speed. It penalizes errors. Formula:
Gross WPM - (Uncorrected Errors / Time). This is the score that employers typically look at. - Accuracy (%): The ratio of correct characters to total characters typed.

Instructions for Taking the Test
